Tamil Nadu. The heated political row surrounding Chief Minister Vijay has escalated to the point where law‑enforcement agencies have filed criminal complaints against senior members of the DMK. Separate FIRs have been lodged against party heavyweight A. Raja, district secretary‑MLA P.K. Sekar Babu and DMK legislator Vasantham Karthikeyan for allegedly uttering defamatory statements during recent party rallies. Police officials confirmed the developments on Tuesday.
According to the police, the complaints were filed at multiple police stations after members of the public reported statements made during the September 12 demonstrations.
An FIR has been recorded against P.K. Sekar Babu, the DMK’s Chennai East district secretary and Harbour constituency MLA, at the B1 North Beach police station. He is accused of hurling derogatory remarks at Chief Minister Vijay during a party protest.
In Saidapet, police lodged a case against DMK leader A. Raja following a grievance submitted by TVK office‑bearer Karthik. Raja is alleged to have made offensive comments about Energy Resources and Law Minister R.N. Nirmal Kumar during the same protest. Earlier, Raja had challenged the TVK, urging that a case be filed if his statements were objectionable.
Raja also asserted that leaders from the Congress and BJP had acknowledged the contributions of DMK chief M.K. Stalin and his alleged arrest under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency.
A separate FIR was filed by Kallakurichi police against Vasantham Karthikeyan, the DMK MLA from Rishivandiyam, for making disparaging remarks about Chief Minister Vijay.
MISA‑Related Remarks Spark the Controversy
The dispute erupted after Chief Minister Vijay referenced the MISA in a legislative assembly debate. The DMK responded with statewide protests, accusing Vijay of levelling corruption charges against M.K. Stalin while simultaneously invoking his purported detention under MISA during the 1975‑77 Emergency. Party members swiftly condemned Vijay’s remarks.
Energy and Law Minister R.N. Nirmal Kumar later backed Vijay’s statements in the assembly and questioned the claim that Stalin had been incarcerated under MISA during the Emergency.
Kumar pointed out that no official detention order exists to substantiate the allegation, asking where such a document would be if Stalin had truly been held under MISA. He accused the DMK of exploiting the episode to cast Stalin as a political martyr for electoral advantage.
