Mysterious death of a Pakistani detainee raises alarms

On Sunday, 36‑year‑old Pakistani national Shahid Imran was found lifeless inside his cell at the high‑security Central Jail in Kot Bhalwal, Jammu. The unexplained nature of his demise has prompted an immediate police inquiry.

Who was the inmate?

A native of Sargodha, Punjab, Imran had been in custody since October 2024 after being arrested near the International Border in the Makwal sector of Jammu. He was awaiting trial on charges connected to cross‑border activity and had remained in pre‑trial detention throughout the legal process.

What transpired?

Jail officials reported that prison staff discovered Imran unconscious early Sunday morning. He was rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital in Jammu, where doctors later confirmed his death.

Imran had a documented history of mental‑health challenges, and an initial review hinted at a possible suicide. Nevertheless, officials stressed that no definitive cause has been established yet.

Ongoing investigations

Both the police and prison administration have launched a comprehensive probe. The body has been dispatched for a post‑mortem, and the final cause of death will be disclosed once the autopsy report and investigative findings are complete.

"We are handling this case with the highest level of seriousness and will pursue every lead to uncover the truth," a senior police spokesperson said.

The incident has ignited calls for a systematic review of inmate welfare, especially mental‑health provisions, and a broader assessment of conditions in high‑security prisons across the region.
